Building on 100 Years of Planning Advocacy

The Committee of 100 on the Federal City celebrated its centennial in 2023.  In 1923, a group of distinguished citizens founded The Committee of 100 on the Federal City to sustain and safeguard the fundamental values of the L’Enfant and McMillan Plans that give the nation’s capital much of its distinction, beauty and rich community character. As independent citizen advocates for sound planning, we are active city-wide in land use planning, zoning, transportation, historic preservation and parks and open space conservation.

The Planning Subcommittee advocates for policies, plans and development that enhance Washington, DC.

The Parks and Environment Subcommittee preserves parks and open space in Washington, D.C. in line with the principles of the McMillan Plan.

The Transportation Subcommittee promotes sound planning for commuter and passenger rail, streetcars, underground parking for neighborhood businesses and residents, and billboard and sign control.

The Historic Preservation Subcommittee protects and preserves the significant historic properties, vistas, landscapes, and archaeology of D.C.

The Zoning Subcommittee promotes land use policies and practices that are in conformance with the city’s Comprehensive Plan.

The Housing Subcommittee promotes an inclusive city by advocating policies and tools that will produce greater housing affordability.
